I have started this thread to get feedback on the beta firmware that has recently been released. If you are participating in the beta, please feel free to write about your experience here. Use as much detail as possible when describing any issues you experience or any fixes you've implemented. We look forward to hearing back from you guys so we can further improve upon DreamScreen!

As requested, here is my experience with the latest DS4K beta firmware (I will also include the issues that have carried over without change.) Please keep in mind that these are only my experiences thus far and do not reflect a universal set of expectations or experience for anyone else's unique setup:
Current Setup:
*Dreamscreen Device: DS4K Running firmware version: 1.6.5.5 *Sidekicks: 2 running firmware version 3.1 *Display: LG 65UH7650 65" LCD TV *Receiver: Onkyo TX-RZ710 *Video Input Devices: -PS4 (Non-Pro) - connected to receiver -Nvidia Shield TV - connected to receiver -Nintendo Switch - connected to receiver -Philips BDP7502 4K Blu Ray Player (replacing a Samsung UDB K8500) - connected directly to DS4K for picture and secondary HDMI to receiver for audio *Wifi setup: Orbi Mesh Wifi (RBK30)
*HDR Whitewashing: -Largely fixed with 'HDR Tone Remapping' turned on -Balancing the color to address your wall's paint tone does not always sync with non-HDR content -This means you have to adjust your 'Saturation' balance between the RGB values each time you change from non-HDR to HDR or vice versa to get accurate projected color reproduction -Having numerical values for the sliders or profiles for quickly switching would be a helpful fix
*General Whitewashing: -Using a colorspace other than rec. 709 (BT.709) continues to be "whitewashed." -This means that to use HDR on your video device, you must manually switch to rec. 2020 when appropriate -For example, typically my Shield TV defaults to Ycbcr 4:2:0 rec. 2020 which is whitewashed, switching to rec. 709 alleviates this, but if I want to watch an HDR movie on Amazon, Vudu, Fandango Now, etc., I have to manually change the HDMI output settings in the device menu -HDR Tone Remapping can be used in conjunction with non-HDR rec. 2020 material, however, the saturation is typically much too high and occasionally, certain colors lose their accurate reproduction
*Handshake Issues: -Handshake issues are still the prevalent problem with the device -Anything other than 4:2:0 rec. 2020 or RGB rec. 709 leads to either intermittent blackouts, flashing between a black screen and an image, or occasionally HDCP errors -For historical reference, I have indeed tried about 5 brands and 3 different lengths of HDMI cables and only the non-branded "Fry's Electronics" specials were completely useless, the other brands have all acted the same -4K Blu Ray Players are the most affected in my experience -I replaced my Samsung unit because it flat out didn't work with DS4K after multiple cable/connection changes -The Philips 4K Blu Ray player must be started in what I call the "Apollo 13" method (just watch the scene with Gary Sinise attempting to start the Lunar module while staying under the allotted amps and you'll get the idea.) -What works for me is: -Power on Receiver -Power on Blu Ray -Power on TV -Switch DS4K from non-Blu Ray input to Blu-Ray input (sometimes repeat this step) -Wait 2 minutes or so for the screen to flash back and forth to complete the handshake -Watch a movie -(Settings for the Blu Ray Player will follow further down.) -It should be noted that with the DS4K removed from the link, I can use the same cables, connected through the receiver and everything works without a single hiccup
*Connection Issues: -The DS4K will go missing from the app upon startup from time to time -A force close/reboot of the app generally fixes the issue -The sidekicks will occasionally go missing from the app -A force close/reboot of the app generally fixes the issue -These issues were not prevalent in my setup before the beta update and they are not frequent, but still happen enough to be a nuisance at times (always seems to be when you're trying to show it off, lol.) -It did have to go through the firmware update twice. After the first update, the firmware read accurately, but upon rebooting the app, it had appeared to revert to the non-beta firmware and was available to update in the settings menu -This hasn't happened again
*Miscellaneous -The device passes through Dolby Vision to the television just fine (the lights obviously do not work in Video Mode, but at least the video benefit is not defeated. Still holding out for a licensing deal Dreamscreen… sorry, had to get that in there, Avengers Infinity War is in DV, lol.) -24hz no longer offers seizure inducing flashes, but the bottom half of the lights still don't work. -Ycbcr 4:4:4 appears to work with 4K Blu Ray now and has continued to function after a few power cycles -The 4K Blu Ray settings that work for me are: HDR - Auto, Colorspace - Ycbcr 4:4:4 rec. 2020, 24hz - Off -The sidekicks appear to work fine and I haven't had many issues other than occasionally their Video mode won't function, but a force close/reboot will fix this
Overall, the experience has at least renewed my faith in the product and I feel like the team is taking it seriously. The news that they've postponed the DS Connect and are working toward fixing these problems is hugely appreciated and I hope they continue on the path to success. With just a few more tweaks and adjustments, I think they'll have it and then time for a new and exciting future! Thank you Dreamscreen, good work! Again, these experiences are my own and no expectation of functionality should be taken from these comments for any unique setup. Let me know if you have any questions or specifics.

Using my PS4 pro and Xbox one S connected directly to my tcl TV, I noticed a small lag. TV seems to be just a second quicker than the DreamScreen. Also will there be a way that the DS can automatically switches on tone mapping when HDR content is detected??

How can I get the beta firmware for my device?

Right, just installed the latest firmware and hate to admit it, but really disappointed in this one. HDR sources now actually come through as purple whenever something dark shows up on screen (rather than previously simply being washed out). Reverting back to SDR format doesn't even fire up the lights anymore...is there a way to back to the previous firmware?

Quickly tested new firmware : - New HDR option works great ! But would be nice not to have to switch it manually... - With my Nvidia Shield with (at least) YUV 4:2:0 10 bits Rec. 2020 colorspace (Shield's default / recommanded one), colors are whitewhashed. With YUV 4:2:0 Rec. 8 or 10 bits 709 colorspace, colors are perfect, but I can't use HDR anymore (at least with Netflix). Is a fix planned for this ? Here are 2 pictures of each colorspace : photos.app.goo.gl/6NAGTMTdLS79SeHv9

Tap the 'Gear' settings icon. Tap on Advanced Settings. It'll then be the last toggle option, just above the widget settings. *Be aware, this option is only available in the 4K Dreamscreen. As for the Nvidia Shield, if you set it to 4:2:2, HDR remapping will get you a closer, more saturated color projection, but does oversaturate pretty heavily in some scenarios. Skin tones, for instance, can sometimes turn out orangish.

Thanks, everyone - as mentioned above, I only have the DS HD with a HDFury linker taking care of 4k downscaling...let's hope they build in that button into the next firmware update or I am pretty much stranded!

They more than likely would not incorporate that option (HDR remapping) in the non 4K units. The only popular consumer device that outputs HDR in 1080p content is the PS4 (non pro.) The market for 1080p non-HDR is non-existent at best. If there are color errors coming out of the HD Fury, than more than likely, there is a remapping issue between the Fury and the Dreamscreen. As the DS team already offers a 4K HDR solution (at least now with the new firmware,) they are neither obligated nor, I would imagine, would they be interested in troubleshooting a product that would ultimately circumvent their sales of the 4K DS. It just wouldn't make business sense and the cost of R&D could be spent on improving their current products. It ultimately sounds like the HD Fury may be outputting an improperly scaled HDR to SDR conversion. The DS unit is only displaying the input it receives, though a change in algorithms with a DS update could have indeed made that an issue.
