I like my DS HD and don't want to brick anyhting. Don't think the DS power supply will handle 72 watts and I have another Power supply handy. Is this a good way to do this and is it right?

That diagram seems to be correct. The important thing is to NOT tie power between the hub and the other PSU, and only use DOUT and GND. (I assume you already read the external PSU document found here dreamscreen.boards.net/post/3034/thread)

Thanks kyle! I did read that and saw the video too. Image below is the strip I have. LED out port #1 for DIY cable: The Green (data) , White (GND) and Red (+) on the JST plug are the wires that will go to the strip....correct? What should be done with the other 2 wires a red and white.....join the 2 Reds? and do what with the White one? As per my diagram on the second strip Same question...join the 2 Reds? and do what with the extra White one?

"LED out port #1 for DIY cable: The Green (data) , White (GND) and Red (+) on the JST plug are the wires that will go to the strip....correct?" -Yes that is correct for the strip that is to be powered directly from the hub
Dont quote me but it looks like the extra red and white wires are redundant, and probably not necessary
