Hi Fellow DS owners and potential buyers
I thought I'd share my experience with purchasing and setting up of my Dreamscreen 4K solo.
I'd been looking around these forums for some months and had all but ruled out buying DS because of all the technical problems I was reading about, I had set my sights on a Hyperion Kit based on the Rasp Pi, however the Pi version is rather cumbersome as it needs so many parts to make it work, the DS is compact all in one solution. I'd heard about the DS 4K solo version and thought I'd wait until it was released before making a decision or which to buy.
So I purchased the Dreamscreen 4K solo from Lime Pro here in the UK, it arrived the next day with no Flex LEDs that I'd ordered, after a quick call to customer service, found out that these aren't packed in the same box, they sent them out and they arrive the next day, so I guess if you're ordering the Solo with LEDs make sure they ship everything.
With my amp having dual HDMI outputs the DS 4K Solo seem for me to be the best option, using the HDMI second output should negate any issue with passing through the signal, or so I thought!
My AV Amp was a Sony STR DN1060, after setting everything up I plugged the DS into the second HDMI port it would drop the Main 4K port HDMI signal to 1080P, I wasn't sure if this was a problem with the DS 4k Solo or the AV Amp, with a bit of swapping cables it turns out it was the AV Amp, using the second HDMI output would make them both 1080P, with the limited 4K support on this AV Amp it was time for me to upgrade. Just a side note all my 1080P sources worked fine with the Solo, just had the issue with 4K.
I picked up a Denon AVR X2500H from my local dealer and made sure before purchase that both HDMI outputs were both 4K HDCP2.2, all good there.
My setup with the Denon work fine with 1080P sources, when trying to use it with 4K HDR the Flex LEDs would flash bright white every so often, I order some Premium Certified 4K HDMI cables just to check it wasn't those causing the issue, it wasn't! So the next step was to have a quick read through the forums to see if anybody else had experienced the same problem, there were indeed a few post on the subject, but most seem to discuss refresh rates as the culprit!
After trying a few settings on the app to no avail the flashing was still present, I then turned off the 4K processing on the Denon, leaving the 4k Blu Ray Player and TV to do any processing, well this solved the flash issue, it turns out that the additional 4K processing in the AV Amp effected the DS Solo 4K, so all working so far.
The following issues still remain:
1) I need to change the setting on the DS app depending on which source I'm using, so for 4K I need to turn on HDR Tone Remapping, turn Widescreen Detection on, turn Colour boost off.
2) The DS App requires the ability to have pre-sets depending on what Video source you're using!
3) On the App, some setting are in Video settings and some are in Advance settings, seems the HDR remapping selection needs to be in the Video section!
4) I need to sort out the colour calibration, at the moment the colours are very inaccurate, and this changes depending on the source, considering I have a white wall the calibration isn't particularly straight forward.
5) The DS 4K Solo seems extremely sensitive to the 4K signal entering it, I think this could do with some additional tweaking or some extra settings in the App to filter the input, if that's even possible!
So inconclusion the DS 4K Solo is a good product but really just needs refining, it can be very frustrating trying different things to get it all working.
Apologies for my long post, but I hope this may help if you experience the same issue as I've had.
All the best,
Jezza
